Doreen Young was born and brought up in Stoke Newington, North London, with her identical twin and younger sister. She worked in Meteorology and Geology as a Scientific Officer before beginning a long career as a teacher of English in Boarding education, first for five years as Housemistress at Culford School, Bury St. Edmunds, then, also locally, until retirement. To be cast as the 1940s Teacher in the BBC Series ‘Evacuation’ gave her the most privileged teaching moments among many. Now, she likes to teach herself, to write.
“Doreen Young surprised and delighted us all in her part in the BAFTA-nominated series Evacuation, and so I’m sure her book of stories will equally surprise and delight you.” - TIM CARTER, CEO Twenty Twenty Television
“Doreen Young is a clear and sharp-eyed observer, interested in the irregularities that thread everyday life. She writes with care and precision - and with a poet’s eye for detail.” - ELIZABETH COOK, Poet |
